Question

When the concentration of solutes is low in a plant cell, absorption of water is?

Solution

Osmosis:

It is the movement of water or solvent molecules from the region of higher diffusion pressure to the region of lower diffusion pressure across a semipermeable membrane.

If the concentration of solutes is low in plant cells, the fate of absorption of water:

  1. When the concentration of solutes is low in plant cells in comparison to the surrounding, the environment resembles a hypertonic solution.
  2. This would lead to exosmosis, in which withdrawal of water takes place when a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, hence the absorption of water would be hindered.
