Question

Why Solids Cannot Be Compressed?

Open in App
Solution

Solids:

  • A solid-state is simply one of the states of matter.
  • Solids have distinct properties that distinguish them from liquids and gases.
  • The solid-state of a compound is heavily influenced by atomic features such as its organization and the forces operating between them.

Incompressible nature of solids:

  • Solids are defined by their shape and volume.
  • The particles in the solid are tightly packed and held in fixed places where they can only vibrate and cannot migrate or flow.
  • Solids have small inter-particle gaps and are densely packed, hence they cannot be compressed since there is no room for particles to migrate.
  • As a result, solid cannot be easily compacted.
