Question

Write an activity to show that synthetic fibres are stronger than the cotton fibres.

Open in App
Solution

Aim: To show that synthetic fibers are stronger than the cotton fibers

Activity

  • Take a clamped iron stand and a cotton thread about 65 cm long.
  • Tie the thread to the clamp, allowing it to hang freely.
  • Suspend a pan at the free end so that weight can be placed in it.
  • Add weight one at a time until the thread breaks.

Observation

  • Make a note of the total weight needed to break the thread. This weight represents the fiber's strength.
  • Repeat the process with wool, silk, and nylon threads.
  • You'll notice that the weight required to break the threads of wool, silk, and nylon is greater than that of cotton.

Inference

  • Synthetic fibres are therefore stronger than cotton since the weight required to break the threads of wool, silk, and nylon is greater.
