Question

Describe the number of Orbitals ?

Open in App
Solution

The total number of orbitals are:

  • A molecule is formed when orbitals combine together. The four orbitals s(sharp), p(principle), d(diffuse) and f(fundamental) are their for the formation of a molecule.
  • They have tendency to hold certain amount of electrons in their shells as given s=2e-,p=6e-,d=10e-and f=14e-.
  • The porbital further comprises of px,py and pz orbitals while d-orbital comprises of dxy,dyz,dxz,dx2-y2 and dz2.

Thus, number of orbitals can be determined in an orbital.
