Question

Do C4 plants have Rubisco?

Open in App
Solution

Rubisco:

  1. Rubisco is abbreviated for Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase.
  2. It catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the Calvin-Benson cycle.

C4 Plants:

  1. C4 plants use the Hatch-Slack cycle for the dark reaction of photosynthesis.
  2. The Hatch-Slack cycle is the chemical process of photosynthesis that occurs independently of light, called the dark reaction.
  3. Photosynthesis also occurs when the stomata are closed in C4 plants.
  4. Their leaves have a Kranz anatomy (the mesophyll cells are clustered in a ring-like fashion around the bundle-sheath cells).
  5. C4 plants have two CO2 acceptors.
  6. C4 requires a tropical and dry environment.
  7. In C4 plants the RuBisCO bundle is present in the sheath cells.
  8. Examples include maize, sugarcane, bajra, jowar.
