2.) Why does atomic number does not change during the formation of ions?

Solution

Dear student!

A Cation is a positively charged particle which is formed when an electropositive element releases an electron and so the no. of proton (which was equal to no. of electrons originally) increases and thus the atom gets a + charge.

These are called as cations because, these ions are attracted towards the negative electrode (i.e. the cathode).

An anion is a negatively charged particle which is formed when an electronegative element gains an electron and attains a negative (-) charge due to increased no. of electrons.

These are called as anions because they move towards positively charged anode.

2.Atomic number of an atom depend on the number of both protons and electrons. While converting an atom into ions only the number of electrons is changed but the number of protons remain same.So its atomic number also remain the same.
