Question

18 g C and 40 g O2 on complete reaction gives gaseous mixture which is further treated with 2 moles NaOH solution. Calculate the moles of Na2CO3 formed (assuming no reaction of NaOH occurs with CO & complete reaction with CO2)

Solution

The correct option is B 1 mol
C+12O2COmolesaa2a
C+O2CO2molesbbb

So according to the questions,
a+b=1812=1.5 (i)
a2+b=4032=1.25 (ii)
Now, (i)(ii)a=0.5
b=1
The corresponding chemical reaction of CO2 and NaOH is
CO2+2NaOHNa2CO3+H2O
1 mol 2 mol
So here CO2 is the limiting reagent and thus 1 mol of Na2CO3 will be formed.
