Question

2 flask of equal volume has been joined by a narrow tube of negligible volume. Initially both flask are at 300 k containing 0.6 mole O2 gas at 0.5 atm pressure. One of the flask is then placed in thermostate at 600 K. Calculate find pressure and mole of O2 gas in each flask.

Solution

Initially, for both flasks,

PV=nRT

0.5×V=0.6×R×300

V=360R

Finally,

For flask 1,

P(360R)=xR300

x=1.2P

For flask 2,

P(360R)=yR600

y=0.6P

Here, total no moles will remain constant,

n=x+y

0.6=1.2P+0.6P

P=1/3 atm

So now, no of moles,

x=1.2×1/3=0.4 mol

y=0.6×1/3=0.2 mol

Therefore, the two flasks will contain 0.4 mol and 0.2 mol.
