Question

A 10 L container at 300 K contains CO2 gas at pressure of 0.2 atm and an excess solid CaO (neglect the volume of solid CaO). The volume of container is now decreased by moving the movable piston fitted in the container. What will be the maximum volume of container when pressure of CO2 attains its maximum value given that CaCO3CaO(s)+CO2(g) Kp=0.800 atm.

Solution

The correct option is B 2.5 L
Given
Kp=0.800atm
Volume of container = 10 L
Pressure of CO2= 0.2 atm
Temperature is constant
Solution
CaCO3(s)=CaO(s)+CO2(g)
As only CO2 is gas therefore
Kp=p(CO2)
p(CO2)=0.8atm
If Temperature is constant
PV=constant
Maximum volume will be at Max pressure that is 0.8atm
P1×V1=P2×V2
0.8×V1=0.2×10
V1=2.5L
The correct option is B
