Question

A 60 W load is connected to the secondary of a transformer whose primary draws line voltage. If a current of 0.54 A flows in the load, what is the current in the primary coil? Comment on the type of transformer being used.

Solution

Suppose VS,IS and VP,IP are voltages and current of the secondary and primary of the transformer respectively.

Given,

Ps=60 W

Is=0.54 A

Vp=220 V

Vs=PSIs=600.54=111 V

Voltage in the secondary is less than voltage in the primary. Therefore, the transformer is step down transformer.

Since, the transformation ratio,

VsVp=IpIs (For an ideal transformer)

Ip=VsVp×Is=111220×0.54=0.27 A

Final Answer: 0.27 A
