Question

a) An organic compound (A) of molecular formula C7H6O is not reduced by fehling's solution but will undergo cannizaro reaction. Compound (A) reacts with aniline to give compound (B).
compound (A) also reacts with Cl2 in the absence of catalyst to give compound (C). Identify A,B and C and explain the reactions.
b) The Ka of propanoic acid is 1.34×105. What is the pH of a solution containing 0.5M propanoic acid and 0.5M sodium propanoate?

Solution

a)
i) An organic compound (A) is not reduced by fehling solution but undergoes cannizaro reaction means (A) is benzaldehyde
C6H5CHO+C6H5CHONaOHC6H5COONa+C6H5CH2OH
ii) Compound (A) benzaldehyde reacts with aniline to compound (B) called schiff's base.
C6H5CH=O+C6H5NH2C6H5CH=NC6H5
iii) Benzaldehyde reacts with Cl2 in the absence of catalyst to give (C) benzoyl chloride.
C6H5CHO+Cl2C6H5C(Cl)=O+HCl
A is BenzaldehydeC6H5CHO
B is Schiff's baseC6H5CH=NC6H5
C is Benzoyl chloride
(b)
The pH of an acidic buffer solution is given by the equation.
pH=Pka+log[salt][acid]
pH=1.34×105 and log[0.5][0.5]=log1=0
pH=Pka=log1.34×105
=[5.01271]=log0.5m0.5m=1
=[4.8729]=4.8729
