Question

A body moves in the southern direction for 10 s at the speed of 10 ms1. It then starts moving in the eastern direction at the speed of 20 ms1 for 10 s. The magnitude of the average velocity is ________. The average speed is ________. The total displacement will be _________.

Solution

(Refer to Image)
Distance travelled in southern direction = speed×time=10×10=100 m
Distance travelled in eastern direction = speed×time=20×10=200 m

Average velocity= DisplacementTotal time
=5×10020
=55 m/s

Average speed= Total distanceTotal time=100+20020=30020=15 m/s
Displacement= 1005 m .
