Question

A cell has 32 chromosomes. It undergoes mitotic division. What will be the chromosome number (N) during metaphase? What would be the DNA content (C) during anaphase?

Solution

Chromosome number during metaphase

Number of chromosomes does not change in the S phase.
Given that a cell has 32 chromosomes.
Hence, the number of chromosomes (N) during metaphase = 32

DNA content during anaphase

DNA content inside each chromosome doubles during the S phase of the cell cycle.
Therefore, the DNA content remains doubled until cytokinesis.
Assuming the initial DNA content to be 2C, during S phase it becomes 4C.
Thus, DNA content during anaphase = 4C.

Final answer
Number of chromosomes during metaphase = 32.
DNA content during anaphase = 4C.
