Question

A liquid of mass m and specific heat s is at temperature θ. Another liquid of mass 2 m and specific heat s/2 is at 3θ. If these two liquids are mixed, then calculate the resultant temperature of the mixture.

Solution

Let the resultant temperature be t
According to the principle of calorimetry,
Heatlost=Heatgained
m×S(θ+t)=2m×S2×(t+3θ)
tθ=3θt
2t=4θ
t=2θ
The resultant temperature is 2θ
