A mixture of DNA fragments a,b,c & d having a relationship among themselves w.r.t to their molecular weight as follows: a+b = c, a > b, d > c, They were subjected to agarose gel electrophoresis. The position of these fragments from cathode to anode sides of the gel will be:
DNA is a negatively charged molecule, so in presence of electric current, DNA will migrate towards the positively charged electrode (black to red), more precisely from cathode to anode. In the influence of electric current, smaller sized DNA fragments will move faster whereas heavy fragments will move slower due to higher molecular weight.
Given, that c=a+b which means fragment c is bigger than both a and b fragments. Further we know that a>b and d>c, thus d is the largest fragment, followed by c, a and b in decreasing order of molecular weights.
