Question

A neutron breaks into a proton and an electron. Calculate the energy produced in this reaction is MeV. Mass of an electron =9×1031kg, mass of proton =1.6725×1027kg, mass of neutron =1.6747×1027kg, and speed of light =3×108ms1

Solution

Mass defect = mass of neutron (mass of proton + mass of electron)
or Δm=1.6747×1027(1.6725×1027+9×1031)=1.3×1030kg
Energy produced =Δm×c2=1.3×1030×(3×108)2=1.16×1013J=1.16×10131.6×1019=0.72MeV where (1eV=1.6×1019J)
