Pungent gas is SO2.
It reduces potassium dichromate to green coloured chromium sulphate (Cr2(SO4)3)
K2Cr2O7+2H++3SO2(Cr2(SO4)3)(green)+5H2O+2K+. Thus, the green colour is due to formation of Cr(III) ion.
