The insert size in plasmid vectors cannot exceed 6 - 7 kb. Cosmids can be used to clone DNA inserts up to 45kb. Other vectors like the Bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) can accommodate up to 300-350kb of foreign DNA and Yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) can clone DNA fragments of more than 1Mb in size.
