A square-shaped floor of a room has sides that have a length of 20 feet each. A carpet that is laid on the floor leaves 5 feet from each side of the room. Find the area of the carpet laid.

The given scenario can be represented by the above diagram.

Since 5 feet is left out from each side of the floor, we have:

Length of a side of the carpet
= 20 feet − 5 feet − 5 feet
= 10 feet


Note that each side of the carpet measures 10 feet. Hence, the carpet is square-shaped.

Area of a square = Length of a side×Length of a side

Area of the carpet
= 10 feet×10 feet
= 100 square feet

Thus, the area of the carpet is 100 square feet.
