Given: A wire when connected to 220V mains supply has power dissipation P1. Now the wire is cut into two equal pieces which are connected in parallel to the same supply. Power dissipation in this case is P2.
To find P2:P1
Solution:
Let the resistance of the whole wire = R
We know,
P1=V2R
Now after cutting the wire into two equal pieces the resistance of each piece = R2
Equivalent resistance parallel combination of two R2 resistors
R2×R2R2+R2=R4
Power dissipation becomes
P2=V2R4P2=4V2RP2=4P1P2:P1=4
