Let f(x) = $x^{2} - 5 x - 6$ . x-6 is in the form of x- a, a= 6

According to factor theorem, x-a is the factor if f(a)=0.

Plug in x=a into f(x). we get..

f(a) = $a^{2} - 5 a - 6$

$\Rightarrow f (6) = 6^{2} - 5 (6) - 6 = 36 - 30 - 6 = 0$

Since f(a)=f(6)=0, x-6 is the factor of $x^{2} - 5 x - 6$
