Question

Alkalinity of water, in equivalent/litre (eq/litre), is given by{HCO3}+2{CO23}+{OH}{H+}
where, { } represents concentration in mol/litre. For a water sample , the concentrations of HCO3=2×103mol/litre, CO23=3.04×104mol/litre
and the pH of water =9.0. The atomic weights are: Ca=40; C=12 and O=16. If the concentration of OHand H+ are NEGLECTED, the alkalinity of the water sample (in mg/litre as CaCO3) is

Solution

The correct option is D 130.4
Alkalinity of water (eq/lt)
={HCO3}+2{CO23}+{OH}{H+}

{ } concentration in mol/lt

Given,
HCO3=2×103mol/lt
CO23=3.04×104mol/lt

As per question,
On neglecting H+ and OH concentration
Alkalinity of water =(2×103+2×3.04×104)

=2.608×103geq/lt

=(2.608×103×50)gm/lt as CaCO3

=130.4mg/lt as CaCO3
