As shown in figure, the dipole is placed in uniform electric field in the direction of E.


The net force on dipole is

Fnet=Fq++Fq

Fnet=qEqE=0

The angle between p and E is 0. So, potential energy is given as

U=p.E=pEcos0

U=pE

It repents the maximum negative potential energy of dipole.

U is minimum.
