Are histones found in prokaryotes?

Open in App
Solution

Histones:

  1. Histones are positively charged basic proteins that contain amino acids such as lysine and arginine.
  2. The DNA molecule is wrapped around the histone octamer, resulting in the formation of a structure called ‘nucleosome’.
  3. Histones maintain the chromosome shape and regulate gene activity.
  4. Prokaryotes are unicellular organisms that lack a true nucleus and membrane-bound cell organelles.
  5. Histones are generally not found in prokaryotes. However, Archaea possess histones.
  6. Archae are unicellular prokaryotes that are mostly found in harsh habitats. Example: Halobacterium.
