Arrange the following in sequence of their occurrence:
(i) Mutation
(ii) Reproductive isolation
(iii) Natural selection
(iv) Evolution
(i), (ii), (iii), (iv)
The correct sequence is:
Mutation → Reproductive isolation → Natural selection → Evolution
A mutation is the permanent alteration of the nucleotide sequence of the genome of an organism which leads to a change in the genotype of the organism. The species with a difference in its genotype may survive and interbreed with other organisms producing a progeny that also consists of the mutated gene. Nature then selects whether this organism can survive and adapt to the environment it is living in. Usually, mutations and variations occur in order to have a better adaptation to the environment and the organisms which are unable to adapt will not survive. This then leads to evolution.
