Introduction to cell theory
The cell theory, which recognised cells being the structural and functional unit of all living beings, was put forward by Schleiden and Schwann in 1838 and 1839 respectively. Later in 1855, Rudolf Virchow explained that all cells arise from pre-existing cells.
Key points of cell theory
* All living organisms are composed of cells or their product. Living organisms are made up of cells.
* New cells arise from pre-existing cells. New cells are formed through the process of cell division of the pre-existing cells.
