Question

Calculate the total number of neutrons present in 1 mole of C-14.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1 : Determine the number of neutrons in 1 atom of C-14 from the mass number and atomic number.

Mass number (A) of C-14 atom = 14
Atomic number (Z) of C-14 atom = number of protons = 6
Number of neutrons in one atom of C-14 = M-Z = 14-6 = 8

Step 2 : Calculate the total number of neutrons in 1 mole by using Avogadro number

1 mole of C-14 contains Avogadro number of atoms of C-14 = 6.022 × 1023
Therefore, number of neutrons in 1 mole of C-14 = 8 × 6.022 × 1023 = 4.7 × 1024
