Question

Calculate the weight of ammonia gas.
a) Required for reacting with sulphuric acid to give 78g of fertilizer ammonium sulphate.
b) Obtained when 32.6g of ammonium chloride reacts with calcium hydroxide during the laboratory preparation of ammonia[2NH4Cl+Ca(OH)2gives CaCl2+2H2O+2NH3].

Solution

1. The reaction is as follows:

H2SO4 + 2 NH4OH (NH4)2SO4 + 2 H2O

2. 2 moles of Ammonia produces reacts with 1 mole of Ammonium Sulphate.

Number of moles in 78g of Ammonium Sulphate = 78132.14 = 0.590 moles

Moles of Ammonia required = 2 × 0.590 = 1.18 moles

3. Mass of Ammonia = 1.18 × 17 = 20.06 g.
