Can turgor pressure be seen in protists?

Open in App
Solution

Turgor pressure

  1. It is the pressure exerted by a fluid that pushes the cell membrane against the cell wall.
  2. This gives rigidity to the cell and maintains its shape and function.
  3. It is commonly seen in plant tissues and is absent in animal tissue as they lack a cell wall.

Protists

  1. They are unicellular eukaryotic organisms.
  2. It can be free-living or colonial found in aquatic habitats, soil, damp areas, etc.
  3. They move freely using flagella such as euglena and may have cilia as in paramecium or pseudopodia like an amoeba.
  4. Turgor pressure can be seen in some protists that have cell walls.
  5. Most of the protists lack a cell wall but some have fungi-like cell walls made of cellulose.
  6. These protists show turgor pressure for example algae.
