Definition of compound: A compound is a pure substance that is made up of two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed proportion by mass.

Chemical compounds can generally be classified in two ways.

  1. The compounds are classified into three types based on their properties.
  2. The compounds are classified into two types based on the source or constituent elements.

Classification of Compounds Based on The Source:

Generally, compounds can be classified into two types based on the source namely,

  • Organic compounds
  • Inorganic compounds

Organic compounds:

  1. The compounds which are obtained from living beings such as plants and animals are called organic compounds.
  2. All organic compounds contain carbon as their essential constituent.
  3. Thus, these compounds are also called carbon compounds. They include Methane(CH4), Ethane(C2H6), Propane(C3H8), Acetic acid(CH3COOH), etc.

Inorganic compounds:

  1. The compounds which are obtained from non-living sources such as rocks and minerals are called inorganic compounds.
  2. They include common Salt, Carbon dioxide(CO2), Ammonia(NH3), Sulphuric acid(H2SO4), Washing soda [Sodium carbonate(Na2CO3))], etc.
