Only reaction (ii) takes place


Reaction (i) is not possible because OH is a stronger base than Cl; hence it can't be replaced by Cl. However,in reaction (ii) OH group is first protonated to form R+OH2 in which H2O, being a very weak base, is easily replaced by Cl
