Question

Compound A is a black solid. When heated with dilute Sulphuric acid, the blue solution of B is formed. When the blue solution is treated with Sodium hydroxide solution, a blue precipitate of compound C is formed. When compound C is heated strongly, compound A is again formed. Name the compound A, B, and C.

Explain the chemical reactions and write the balanced chemical equation for the chemical changes that take place.

Solution

Explanation:

  • Iron sulfide (FeS)which is black in color when heated with dilute Sulphuric acid (H2SO4), the blue solution of Ferrous sulfate (FeSO4)is formed along with Hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S). Further, when Ferrous sulfate reacts with Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution, a blue precipitate of compound Iron (II) hydroxide is formed along with Sodium sulfate (Na2SO4).
  • The chemical reactions are as follows.

FeS(s)ironsulfide+H2SO4(l)SulphuricacidFeSO4(aqFerroussulphate)+H2S(g)HydrogensulfideFeSO4(aq)Ferroussulphate+2NaOH(aq)SodiumhydroxideFe(OH)2(s)Iron(II)hydroxide+Na2SO4(s)Sodiumsulfate

Thus, Compound A is Iron sulfide (FeS), Compound B is Ferrous sulfate(FeSO4), and compound C is Iron (II) hydroxide (Fe(OH)2).
