Question

__________ compounds conduct electricity in a fused state or in an aqueous solution.

Solution

  • An ionic bond is formed by the electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions. The bond is formed between two atoms when one or more electrons are transferred from the valence shell of one atom to the valence shell of the other atom.
  • Ionic compounds are crystalline solids and so their ions are tightly held together. Therefore, the ions cannot move freely and do not conduct electricity in a solid state. However, in molten states, they are loosely packed and the ions can move freely to some extent.
  • Example: NaCl,CaCl2

Therefore, ionic compounds conduct electricity in a molten state or an aqueous solution.
