Solution

Corpus luteum is a temporary structure, capable of secreting hormones, that develops in an ovary after an ovum has been produced. It primarily produces progesterone which prepares the uterus for retention and growth of the foetus. It also produces small amounts of oestrogen. The structure degenerates after a few days unless pregnancy has begun.
