Question

Crystal field stabilization energy for [Co(NH3)6]3+ octahedral complex excluding pairing energy is xΔo. Then x is:

Solution

In [Co(NH3)6]3+, Co is in +3 oxidation state. So due to higher oxidation state of Co, though NH3 is not a strong field ligand but still electron will get paired up. So here the electronic configuration of Co3+ would be t62ge0g.
So the CFSE of the complex excluding pairing energy = 6×0.4Δo=2.4Δo
x=2.4Δo
