A functional group may be defined as an atom or group of atoms present in a molecule, which largely determines its properties. For example, − CHO is an aldehydic functional group and − Br is a bromo functional group.

Functional groups for the following are:
(i) alcohol: − OH.
(ii) ketone: >C=O.
(iii) carboxylic acid: − COOH.
