(i) Carbylamine reaction: When aliphatic and aromatic primary amines are heated with chloroform and ethanolic KOH solution, they form isocyanides or carbylamines which are foul smelling substances.
$R - N H_{2} + C H C l_{3} + 3 K O H \to R - N C + 3 K C l + 3 H_{2} O$
(ii) Hofmann's bromamide reaction: In thus reaction, primary amines are prepared by treating an amide with $B r_{2}$ in an aqueous or alcoholic soln of NaOH.
$R - C O - N H_{2} + B r_{2} + 4 N a O H \to R - N H_{2} + N a_{2} C O_{3} + 2 N a B r + 2 H_{2} O$
