Differentiate between the following:
Follicle-stimulating hormone and Luteinizing hormone.
(1) Follicle-stimulating hormone is a glycoprotein hormone which is secreted from gonadotroph cells of pars distails of anterior pituitary.
(2) Luteinizing hormone is a glycoprotein hormone secreted from the gonadotroph cell of pars distalis of anterior pituitary(adenohypophysis).
Follicle-stimulating hormone | Luteinizing hormone |
1. Regulates the growth and development of the ovarian follicle in females. | 1. Stimulates maturation of the ovarian follicle and formation of the corpus luteum in females. |
2. FSH is also called Follitropin. | 2. LH is also called lutropin or interstitial cell-stimulating hormone in male. |
3. Stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles Leydig cells ,i.e, the Ovarian Hilus Cells(OHC) that is present small in number. | 3. Stimulates ovulation. |
4. Spermatogenesis is stimulated through the production of androgen binding protein(ABP) by Sertoli Cells. | 4. Production of testosterone is stimulated by Leydig cells. |
