Discuss the factors which influenced the making of the Indian constitution.

Instructions: Bring out how the freedom struggle, Nehru report and the influnec of British and other democarcies shaped the making of Indian constitution.

Solution:
  1. Freedom Struggle - a prolonged freedom struggle ensured that a broad consensus was reached regarding the need of a constitutional democracy.
  2. The Nehru Report - the 1928 report by Motilal Nehru along with 8 other members of the congress drafted a constitution for India which served as a kind of prelude to the future constitution.
  3. Karachi Session - the Karachi session of congress in 1931, dwelt on how independent India’s constitution should look like. The resolution passed agreed with the Nehru Report on including - universal adult franchise, right to freedom and equality and protection of the rights of minorities in the constitution of independent India.
  4. Familiarity with Colonial Rule - thousands of Indians worked at British political institutions and gained experience. Along with this several ​​institutional details and procedures were adopted from colonial laws like the Government of India Act, 1935.
  5. International Influences - our constitution-makers observed and adopted certain aspects of the constitution from several countries. For example- the practice of parliamentary democracy from Britain, the Bill of Rights from the US and the idea of a system based on social and economic equality from Russia.
