Solution

NH4SCN can be used to make distinction between Cu2+ and Co2+.

Cobalt(II) chloride reacts with ammonium thiocyanate to form blue coloured complex (NH4)2[Co(SCN)4]

CoCl2+4NH4SCN(NH4)2[Co(SCN)4]bluecolour+2NH4Cl

On the other hand Copper(II) chloride reacts with ammonium thiocyanate to form black ppt of Cu(SCN)2.

CuCl2+2NH4SCNCu(SCN)2blackppt.+2NH4Cl.

So, the given statement is true.
