Question

Draw a labelled diagram showing reabsorption and secretion of major substances at different parts of the nephron

Open in App
Solution

ProximalConvoluted Tubule (PCT):

ProximalConvoluted Tubule (PCT):
  • Reabsorption: Almost all essential nutrients, \(70\) - \(80\%\) of electrolytes, bicarbonates, and water.
  • Secretion: Hydrogen ions, ammonia, and potassium ions.
Henle’s Loop:

Henle’s Loop:
  • Reabsorption of water is minimum in ascending limb and from descending limb, only water is reabsorbed.
  • Ascending limb removes electrolytes.
Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT):

Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT):
  • Conditional reabsorption of sodium ions and water.
  • Secretion of Hydrogen ions, ammonia, and potassium ions, and absorption of bicarbonates.
Collecting Duct:

CollectingDuct:
  • Large amounts of water are reabsorbed.
  • Selective secretion of \(H^+\)and \(K^+\) ions.
