Solution

Step-1:

Liquids:

  1. In liquids, the particles are loosely packed.
  2. In liquid, the spaces between the particles are slightly more than that in a solid.
  3. Though, there is a quite strong force of attraction between the particles of a liquid which holds the particles together.

Examples of Liquids:

Water, kerosene, petrol, alcohol, benzene, milk

Step-2:

Activity to understand the characteristics of liquids.:

Procedure :

  1. Collect water, cooking oil, milk, juice, and a cold drink.
  2. Take containers of different shapes.
  3. Put a 50 mL mark on these containers using a measuring cylinder from the laboratory.
  4. Measure 50 mL of any one liquid and transfer it into different containers one by one.
  5. Mark the volume, shape, and flow of the liquid when you pour the liquid from one container into another.

Step-3:

Observation :

  1. The liquids will flow. But the rate of flow of different liquids will be different.
  2. Yes, the volume remains the same.
  3. No, the volume of the liquid changes with the shape of the container.
  4. Yes, the liquid flows easily.

Step-4:

Conclusion:

  1. Thus, we can conclude that liquids do not have a fixed shape but have a fixed volume.
  2. they take up the shape of the container in which they are poured but their volume does not change on changing the shape of the container.
  3. Liquids flow and hence they can be called fluids.
