Question

Perform an activity to understand the diffusion in liquids.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Diffusion refers to the spreading out or mixing of a substance with another substance due to the movement of its particles.
  2. One substance diffuses into another until a homogeneous mixture is obtained.

Aim of the Experiment: Experiment to understand the diffusion in liquids.

Apparatus required: Two beakers, Blue/red ink, and honey.

Procedure:

Step 1– Fill two glasses or beakers with water.
Step 2– Slowly and carefully place a drop of blue or red ink along the sides of the first beaker. Then, honey in the same manner in the second beaker.
Step 3– Allow them to remain undisturbed for a while.
Step 4– Make notes of your observations.

Observations:

  1. As soon as the ink is added to the water in the beaker, it spreads rapidly throughout the liquid.
  2. Although honey also spreads, it takes a much longer period of time than ink.

Conclusion:

  1. From this, it can be concluded that particles of liquid diffuse on their own since they are constantly in motion.
  2. However, the rate of diffusion between two different liquid particles may differ.
