Explain the role of gonadotropins.

  • The gonadotropin hormones include the luteinizing hormones and follicle stimulating hormones which are secreted by the anterior lobe of pituitary gland.
  • They stimulate the gonads or the sex organs in males (testes) and in females (ovaries).
  • FSH stimulates female egg production and male sperm production whereas LH along with FSH help in the ovulation and prepares the uterus for pregnancy in females and in males, it helps in the secretion of testosterone from testes.
  • Testosterone is also known as a masculizing hormone which induces male secondary sexual characteristics after puberty.
  • Estrogen is secreted by the ovaries which induce and maintains female secondary sexual characteristics.
