Explain the system of Permanent Settlement.
(i) The system of Permanent Settlement was started by Lord Cornwallis in 1793.
(ii) According to this settlement, the rajas and the talukdars were made the zamindars. They became hereditary owners of the land. They had to collect the rent from the peasants and deposit the revenue with the company.
(iii) The amount to be paid was fixed permanently; it couldn't be increased in future.
(iv) The aim of this settlement was to ensure a regular flow of revenue for the East India Company.
(v) As the amount of rent to be collected from zamindars was fixed, the Company believed the zamindars would invest remaining revenue in land improvement, which would in turn lead to increased production Instead, they spent most of their time in Calcutta living a life of luxury.
