Golden rice was created by transforming the original rice with two $\beta -carotene$ biosynthesis genes:

(i) psy (phytoene synthase) from daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus).

(ii) Crt I from the soil bacterium Erwinia uredovora.

These two genes together produce $\beta -carotene$ in the rice grain.

Use of this rice can help reduce vitamin -A deficiency, curing night blindness and colour blindness.
