Give an example to show that the speed of sound in solids is more than that of the speed of sound in air.

  1. Let us visit a railway station.
  2. We observe that there is no train visible to us anywhere.
  3. Also, we do not hear any sound or horn of a train.
  4. Let us place our ears gently on the railway track.
  5. On placing our ears in contact with the railway track we hear the sound of a coming train.
  6. If we remove the ears from the track, we do not hear any sound.
  7. The above example shows that the sound in the air (gas) is not able to reach our ears but the sound from the railway track (solid) is easily audible.
  8. Hence we can conclude that sound travels faster in solids than in liquids.
