Question

Give equations of the reaction between hydrochloric acid and (b) zinc oxide

Open in App
Solution

Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is a monobasic acid. A monobasic acid is an acid that produces only one hydrogen ion per molecule of the acid when completely dissociated in water.

When metal oxides react with acids, corresponding salt and water are produced. Zinc Chloride (ZnCl2) salt and water are formed when Hydrochloric acid (HCl) reacts with Zinc oxide ZnO. The balanced reaction equation is as follows:

2HCl(aq)+ZnO(s)ZnCl2(aq)+H2O(l)
