Solution

Wilting:

  1. The loss of rigidity of non-woody plant parts is known as wilting.
  2. It is majorly caused by the loss of turgor pressure in the non-lignified plant parts due to excessive water loss from the plants.

Reasons for wilting of balsam plants:

  1. During mid-day, the transpiration rate in plants is very high, which exceeds the water absorption rate of the roots.
  2. The water lost cannot be compensated by the amount of water absorbed.
  3. This causes them to lose turgidity, and the plants wilt due to water deficiency in cells.
