Solution

Pure substance: A substance that is made of single type of particles having a same chemical nature.

Mixtures: It is a substance made by mixing two or more pure substances in an undefined proportion.

Sugar is classified as a pure substance and not a mixture because:

  1. It consists of a single type of particles made by combining two or more elements in a defined ratio, i.e. it is a compound having a molecular formula of C12H22O11, while mixtures have no definite composition.
  2. Its components cannot be seperated by simple physical methods unlike mixtures whose components can be easily seperated.
